Entry #15873: Right to change legal gender in Hungary

Current Version

RegionHungary
IssueRight to change legal gender
StatusLegal, but requires surgery
Start DateAug 14, 1982
End DateDec 20, 2017
DescriptionLaw-Decree No. 17 of 1982 on the Register of Births, Marriages and Deaths entered into force. Article 32 of this decree provided a general legal basis for rectifying birth registry data that did not correspond to reality. While this provision was theoretically applicable to any erroneous data, it did not explicitly mention gender identity or transsexualism. Consequently, the application of this law to gender recognition was inconsistent and depended entirely on individual administrative decisions without a standardized protocol or a guaranteed constitutional right.
